Here’s how to spend it well.
Get on the Water
Start with Lake Blue Ridge, a 3,290-acre reservoir surrounded by Chattahoochee National Forest and recognized as Georgia’s Trout Capital. Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or pontoon from local outfitters, or bring your fishing gear and spend a morning on some of the clearest mountain water in the Southeast.
For something more immersive, the Toccoa River delivers. Float it by canoe, kayak, or tube through one of North Georgia’s most scenic river valleys. The Toccoa River Swinging Bridge is a beloved landmark along the trail and one of those simple, joyful stops that ends up being everyone’s favorite photo of the trip. The Aska Adventure Area is the most accessible entry point into Blue Ridge’s trail network. A series of well-marked paths through old-growth forest with creek crossings and ridge views that build from beautiful to breathtaking. Long Creek Falls rewards a moderate hike with one of the region’s most photogenic waterfalls. Fall Branch Falls, is shorter and equally stunning, ideal for families or anyone who wants the payoff without the climb.
For serious hikers, the Benton MacKaye Trail passes through the area and offers multi-day wilderness access. Amicalola Falls State Park, is worth the drive for its cascading waterfall, the tallest in the eastern United States.
Ride the Scenic Railway
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway departs from the historic downtown depot on a 26-mile round trip through the Toccoa River Valley to McCaysville and Copperhill, passing through gorges, farmland, and layered mountain scenery that shifts with the light. It’s genuinely beautiful, and one of the most distinctive experiences in the region. Book in advance, summer dates sell out!
Beyond the Trails
For the adventurous: Blue Ridge Adventure Park runs zip lines and a high-ropes course through the forest canopy. Blue Ridge Helicopter Tours offer an aerial perspective on the mountain range that redefines the landscape entirely. The Swan Drive-In, open since 1955, is a summer evening well spent.
Mercier Orchards, seven minutes from downtown, is non-negotiable. Operating since 1943, this legendary farm market is stocked with fresh fruit, homemade cider, and baked goods that make the drive home substantially better.
Where to Eat and Drink
Downtown Blue Ridge’s food scene is underestimated.
Harvest on Main sets the standard for farm-to-table dining in North Georgia, seasonal menus, local sourcing, beautifully executed.
Black Sheep Restaurant brings creative Southern fare in a lively atmosphere.

For drinks, Blue Ridge has craft breweries within or near downtown, plus North Georgia wine country minutes away. Bear Claw Vineyards and Roo Mountain Vineyards both offer tastings that surprise nearly every first-time visitor. Live music fills the summer at local venues throughout the week.
